Ideal Township wants to remind residents and visitors that it is illegal to place political, real estate, garage sale, graduation, wedding, etc. signs within a public road right of way, including the ditch. Signs placed in public road right of ways are in violation of Minnesota Statute 160.27. This statute prohibits putting signs in the road right of way and allows for removal by road authorities.
Unauthorized signs can affect sight distances and create safety concerns for roadway users. Attaching personal informational signs to traffic signs, utility poles, trees, or painting/drawing on rocks or natural features is also a violation of the statute and is punishable with a fine.
Township employees will remove illegally placed signs within the road right of ways. Signs collected from Township roads are taken to the Township Maintenance Building where they may be available for retrieval.
Planting flowers, bushes, trees and placing rocks and other obstructions in the road right of way is also a violation of the statute and is punishable with a fine. These items are also subject to removal by highway crews.
The road right of way varies on each road. Contact the Township to verify the public right of way before placing signs. Make sure you have permission from the landowner before placing signs on private property.
If you have any questions regarding placement of signs, please contact the Township Clerk at 218-543-4392.
